Top 3 Reasons Why People Seek Energy Healing

Why do people seek energy healing?

This is one of the most common questions I receive. The top three reasons are:

  • Relief from symptoms
  • Stress management
  • Healing from trauma

Relief from symptoms:

The easiest way to answer the question is by naming the symptoms that clients report during their Healing Touch and shamanic healing appointments. At a physical level, pain associated with illness, surgery, or injury tops the list, followed by fatigue and poor sleep, digestive issues, and headaches.

Emotional concerns include anxiety, depression, frustration at work and in relationships, overwhelm, and grief. Poor cognitive functioning might be involved, such as brain fog, memory, motivation, or low self esteem.

At the spiritual level, clients express feeling unsupported or disconnected from “something greater,” experiencing aimlessness and seeking insight regarding life purpose and life lessons.

This list is just the tip of the iceberg. I have been practicing energy medicine for 20 years. I’ve come to realize that the “list” doesn’t fully answer the question. The symptoms may be the initial motivation for setting up an appointment. Then, as we begin to explore, we come to realize that all of our symptoms and every aspect of our life experience are interrelated.

So, the reason someone might seek energy healing can be fairly straightforward if the main goal is to address a symptom. But when we approach healing in a more comprehensive holistic way, the process becomes more unique to each individual.

Furthermore, the depth of healing can be surprising and more rewarding than ever imagined. This is what is meant by “getting to the root cause” of our symptoms. Quite often, stress is the culprit.

Stress Management

It is well documented that stress can wreak havoc with our health. From an energetic perspective, a constriction in our energy system occurs. This can be felt in our physical body as well as our emotions and mental functioning.

Think for a moment about something that is stressful for you. Notice where you feel it in your body. Perhaps your jaw clenches, or you feel a pit in your stomach or tightness in your chest, or you begin to experience a headache. Maybe you notice the effect of stress emotionally in the form of sadness, frustration, or anger. Mentally, stress can lead to incessant worry and rumination, making it difficult to sleep, concentrate, think clearly, and make decisions.

Everyone experiences stress differently. The point is, even brief moments of stress can build if we don’t pay attention. Like a slow simmer, stress can eventually express itself in the form of symptoms, which can lead to physical, emotional, and mental illness, as well as spiritual despair.

Healing Touch and shamanic healing are two approaches that can provide relief from the symptoms associated with unrelenting stress through a process of clearing and balancing the energy system.

Healing Touch and shamanic healing also offer methods for managing stress. Yes, it’s everywhere and the occurrence of stressful moments is usually out of our control. As we cultivate self care practices, we can mitigate the impact. We gradually begin to notice a tendency to respond rather than react when moments of stress occur. This, in turn, has a positive effect on our overall health and wellbeing.

Healing from trauma

We all experience trauma throughout our lives. Some traumas are obvious and severe. Examples include abuse, loss, receiving a life-threatening diagnosis, or witnessing something horrific. Sometimes, this trauma is buried as a coping mechanism and its impact emerges gradually as we begin to unpack the events of our lives. Other traumas seem less impactful and easily dismissed, especially if we received the message growing up to “suck it up.” Over time, however, these little traumas can have a cumulative effect.

Either way, trauma has an energetic impact that becomes embedded in our body, mind, and emotions. The result: thoughts and behaviors that are often dysfunctional.

Healing Touch and shamanic healing can help by clearing that stuck energy through a variety of “trauma release” techniques. This release creates space to bring in fresh energy, a sense of relief and freedom to move forward in a new way. We know we have experienced healing from trauma when we realize we may still remember the trauma but we are no longer triggered by it. We feel more neutral because the trauma has lost its energetic charge.

Final note: The importance of referrals

I have always thought of Healing Touch and shamanic healing as “complementary” rather that “alternative” forms of healthcare. An important part of my training is to remain within my scope of practice and make referrals to appropriate medical and mental health providers when necessary. This collaborative approach is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job.
