Strengthening Your Energetic Boundaries

What is our energetic boundary?

We all have an idea of what we mean by “boundaries.”

From a purely physical standpoint, a boundary is the line or edge that divides two areas. For example, a property line makes it clear where my yard ends and my neighbor’s begins. Your skin can be thought of as the boundary between your body and the environment.

Our emotional boundary is a bit less tangible but certainly palpable. We all know how it feels when someone is unkind. It hurts! Or, when someone is nosey, it feels like an invasion of our privacy.

Our energetic boundary, on the other hand, is more subtle. The best way to explain it is to describe two aspects of the human energy system, the chakras and biofield.

The 7 main chakras are vortices of energy that interpenetrate and extend beyond the physical body. They are located along the central axis of the body from the base of the spine to the top of the head.

As they spin, the chakras give rise to the biofield which emanates 2-3 feet beyond the skin. The edge of the biofield is visualized as a golden eggshell, and it delineates the edge of our energetic boundary.

What causes our energetic boundaries to become compromised?

Every aspect of our being – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual – is contained within the biofield. Illness, injury, stress and trauma can cause disruptions in the biofield that result in compromised boundaries. Here are just a few examples.

I’ve had some clients report that they feel drained months, even years, after they had a surgery or injury. Although the incision or injury has healed, they may still be losing energy. Assessing the chakras and biofield and shoring up any energy leaks can be tremendously helpful in regaining their sense of vitality.

In cases of trauma, clients report that they feel vulnerable and afraid. Perhaps they experience other people taking advantage of them and they have a hard time saying no. They might attempt to protect themselves in a variety of ways, but when there is an energetic pattern from their past history it can lead to dysfunctional behaviors as well as anxiety and depression. Through Healing Touch and shamanic healing, the client is able to release those old patterns and bring in new energetic patterns that help them reclaim their power and interact with others in a healthy manner.

Sometimes a client will tell me that they feel other people’s pain and emotions so strongly it becomes overwhelming. There’s a good chance that these clients are empaths. There is much we can do to find the balance, empowering them to care about others without taking on their energy. Strengthening their energetic boundaries is key.

Why is it important to keep our energetic boundaries strong?

If we keep our energetic boundaries strong:

  • We are less impacted by what’s happening in our environment, including our family, workplace, and the world at large.
  • We feel more energized, motivated, and able to engage with others.
  • We feel in good alignment with our true self, our life purpose. Ultimately this is the essence of all healing.

How can I strengthen my energetic boundaries?

There are a variety of methods that I use every day, for my own self care and in my Healing Touch and shamanic healing practice to help my clients strengthen their energetic boundaries. Every session includes three basic steps.

First, we have a discussion to identify sources of stress and explore experiences from their past which may contribute to vulnerability. Then, I assess their energy system and use methods for clearing, balancing, and strengthening their energy system. At the end of each session, I suggest self care methods to help keep those boundaries strong.
