Have you ever felt you were led by Sprit to exactly the right thing in your life?
There was a time in my life when I was a happy at-home mom with four children, a tennis club membership, and a rewarding volunteer position at Midwest Palliative and Hospice CareCenter. But as my children got older, I knew I didn’t want to spend all my time doing volunteer work and playing tennis.
What was the next step for me? I felt lost and needed direction. I never expected to hear a message from the Universe about what I was meant to do. After all, I was a practical and scientifically-minded former biology teacher!
Then, in 2005, my youngest son, Ryan, was having some health issues. A friend suggested that I take him to a cranial sacral therapist. I had never heard of cranial sacral, but I was willing to give it a try.
When we arrived, I knew that this was going to be very different from any doctor’s visit I had been to before. The doctor wore jeans and moccasins, and his office had candles burning and a giant geode on the floor. He asked my son to lay down on the treatment table and invited me to sit nearby.
Soon Ryan was completely calm and almost in another world. I was amazed as I watched this new type of healing in action.
That’s when I heard a voice: “You need to find out about this.”
I attended Catholic school, and I remember the nuns telling us that we needed to listen for “the calling,” which, in their mind, meant the calling to become a nun. Now I was experiencing a calling, but I didn’t know what I was being called to do.
A few days later, my yoga instructor suggested a remedy for joint pain and sent me to a homeopathic store in Evanston. I was amazed at the new world I found there of herbal remedies and holistic products. I also found a brochure for Healing Touch and discovered that there was a class being offered the very next weekend, only 10 minutes from my house.
Could this be what I needed to find?
I decided to take a leap of faith. I registered for the classes and within a few months was volunteering at a Healing Touch clinic, which clarified my vision and reaffirmed that this was my calling. I met like-minded students and inspiring teachers, and one day, I got a call from a Healing Touch practitioner at Whole Health Chicago. She was moving to Maine and invited me to interview to take over her practice.
It will soon be 10 years since I began at Whole Health and I continue to feel blessed that I answered the calling and found a new way of life.
Looking back, I can see that I was guided every step of the way. Everything I did had a purpose: my foundation in biology, my master’s in education, my experience as a mother and hospice volunteer, and all the people who pointed me in a new direction—all of those pieces led me to where I am today.
I know that being open to Spirit was crucial to finding what I was meant to do. And as I continue to listen, I continue to be guided to new opportunities, deeper connections with the Healing Touch Program and my shamanic practices, and new ways of offering healing to others.
Have you ever heard a “calling” before? If so, I’d love to hear about it.
Katie, you present your story with clarity and passion. Thank you for encouraging all of us to listen to the messages that come from our deepest selves, and thus aspire to be our BEST selves! Congrats on your anniversary!
What a beautiful story about hearing your call, Katie! I struggled for years as a professional musician, plagued by intense pressure to be “perfect” and perform in front of large crowds (which is so NOT me). At age 30, I finally learned about music therapy, which is a perfect for me. Now I get to use my musical skills to help people during some of the most difficult times in their lives, and I get to connect one-on-one with people in a meaningful way. Thank you for sharing your inspiring story.
Hi Rachel,
I appreciate your comments. Indeed, it is a blessing to find one’s calling. I’m happy your work is so gratifying 🙂
Take care,
Katie
