We’ve all heard the expression “keep it simple.” I’ve devoted the past 12 years to studying energy medicine, offering Healing Touch and shamanic healing to thousands of clients. I’ve been curious, mystified, and deeply moved by the transformation that energy healing has provided for others and myself. But when trying to explain what I do, I’ve struggled to find the right words.
But it’s so simple: I help people experience relief from pain and anxiety without medication or surgery.
I’m reminded of the many times I traveled to the home of 82-year-old Lizzy, an ovarian cancer patient. She was experiencing abdominal cramping and constipation as a side affect from her chemotherapy treatments. I frequently used Magnetic Clearing during our sessions, and by the time I arrived home at the end of the day there was usually a message on my voice mail: “Thank you so much for our session today. I feel so calm and relaxed. And, this may be gross to say on your answering machine, but I had a wonderful bowel movement after you left!”
Roger had a series of difficult circumstances: he lost his job and home, and three months later his wife died. The grief he felt was palpable and the level of anxiety about his future as an unemployed 60-year-old was through the roof. Our sessions focused on relieving emotional pain, often utilizing a method called the Chakra Spread. Each session provided a respite for Roger, and over time he was gradually less consumed by fear and anxiety in his day to day life.
And then there was Clare, age 9, who came to me with a broken arm. On a scale of 0-10 with 0 representing no pain and 10 representing intense pain, she reported a pain level of 8. Her doctor had prescribed meds, but her parents were reluctant to use them, especially during the day. After the Chakra Connection, followed by several minutes of Magnetic Passes: Hands in Motion, her pain was gone. As Clare left the room, she raised her broken arm and exclaimed, “Even the cast feels lighter!”
I’ve found freedom from pain in my own life, too. Years ago, I was anxious and depressed. Healing Touch and shamanic healing were both part of my healing process. This is what inspires me to help others find relief.
There is a significant body of scientific research that supports the use of energy healing for treating pain and anxiety in a variety of situations.
One study showed that biofield therapies effectively reduced joint pain in patients with osteoarthritis. Another study looked at chronic neuropathic pain in people with spinal cord injuries and found that Healing Touch played a beneficial role in pain management. Another suggested that Healing Touch may be a useful integrative therapy to consider as a pain management option in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
To take it one step further, some researchers have examined the validity of the research. One of my favorite articles is “Biofield Therapies: Helpful or Full of Hype? A Best Evidence Synthesis.” It reviewed 66 clinical studies and determined that “biofield therapies show strong evidence for reducing pain intensity in pain populations.” It also cited evidence that those with dementia and anxiety benefitted.
Even with all these studies, it’s still hard to explain something that ultimately goes beyond scientific exploration. So, how do I answer the question, “What do I do?” I keep it simple. As 9-year-old Clare so eloquently exclaimed, I help lighten the load, bringing freedom from pain.
