One of the most common complaints I hear from clients is that they feel stressed. And in this crazy world, who doesn’t?
Stress affects our daily lives. It contributes to emotional upheaval, and is now considered a major contributing factor in chronic illnesses. Thankfully, the impact of stress can be significantly reduced with a little self-care.
One way to de-stress is to use a simple centering and grounding technique that can be used throughout the day. If you are going into a stressful meeting, anticipating a tense conversation with someone, or simply aiming to move through your life with grace and ease, you can diffuse whatever problems are in front of you with a few deep breaths and this simple practice:
- Start by sitting upright in a comfortable position with your feet flat on the floor.
- Bring your attention to your breath and notice its natural rhythms. Breathe in and out slowly and deeply, without forcing anything.
- Once an even rhythm is attained, think of the word “peace” with each inhale and “calm” with each exhale. Continue this for 30 seconds… peace… calm… peace… calm. You will notice that concerns drift into the background of your awareness as you continue to focus on the breath.
You are settled and present. This is what it means to be centered.
- Next, bring your attention to the base of your spine. As you exhale, imagine sending a cord of energy down to the center of the Earth.
- As you inhale, imagine bringing that Earth energy up into your body. Repeat this several times, noticing how this connection to the Earth feels.
It is as if you are growing strong roots into the ground and bringing all of the nutrients and goodness of the Earth into your body. This is what it means to be grounded.
I recommend that you practice this technique first thing in the morning and add a positive intention to it. You can say something like:
“I intend to be focused and disciplined today.”
“I intend to be patient.”
“I welcome creativity and joy into my life.”
“I embrace great abundance.”
Whatever you feel would be helpful to you is the perfect intention.
With a little practice, you can learn how to feel more calm, centered, and grounded in less than a minute!
